Cruise ships, Vietnamese salads and an app called Foghorn

by | Mar 1, 2018

Our office in Wellington is on The Terrace above the Cable Car and Cable Car Lane. Our team all love to buy Vietnamese salads and bánh mì from Nam D in cable car lane for lunch – it’s yummy and conveniently located. On days when cruise ships are in town it can be nearly impossible to get to our favourite salad bar so the idea of creating an alerting app to let us know it’s a cruise ship passenger day was born – Foghorn.
As committed Wellingtonians the team here also love sharing our great city with tourists! we recognise how important they are for the local and national economy. We just choose to go other places for lunch and walk a different way to Lambton Quay on the days they are here.
We’ve found Foghorn pretty useful so far so have opened it up for everyone to use. You sign up by simply providing your email address through the website and start getting emails 4 hours before the next ship is due to arrive in the capital. Local businesses can use it to let them know when to expect their next wave of customers too. We only collect your email address for the purpose of alerting you and you can unsubscribe at any time.
The timetable data we use for Foghorn alerts comes from a file published by the Port company here in Wellington – sadly they don’t publish it in a machine readable or #opendata format (opting for PDF) meaning it isn’t straightforward to consume. We’d be happy to help them build an API anyone can consume of course.
If you have any questions about this feel free to write a comment on this post or contact Victoria (
