We first came across BEAM*, Lawrence Corr and Jim Stagnitto over seven years ago when we were scratching our heads trying to figure out a better way to design an agile data warehouse.  Since then, we’ve convinced Lawrence to travel to Aotearoa many times to deliver his 3-day masterclass, we’ve used our knowledge and experience to develop our own 1-day introduction to defining data requirements and data modelling, and if you give us the chance, we’ll sing from the rooftops about how helpful we’ve found this method over the years.

It would be fair to say that learning BEAM* has made our lives easier.

This blog is a summary of our most popular BEAM* blogs of all time.  If you want to know more about what BEAM* is, how it can help you as a Business Analyst or a Developer,  or read real world examples of how we’ve used BEAM* in our everyday working life, take a look at the blogs below.

Why BEAM is Great

This blog covers the main things that make BEAM* such a good system covering such things as the business side focus and collaborative approach to modeling of BEAM*.

CASE STUDY: TEC AGILEBI COACHING

Bit of different take on BEAM* with this blog by Vic, in this blog you can see what the outcome is once a team learns and embraces the BEAM* method, and uses it in their everyday work to great success.

Gathering Requirements via Modelstorming

AGILEBI VS BEAM✲ VS MODELSTORMING

If you have been confused by the different terms we use, here’s a data dictionary for you! Shaun breaks down each of the terms in the title and gives details on what each one really means, in an effort to help with confusion.

MODELSTORM YOUR WAY TO AN AGILE DATA WAREHOUSE

This blog is your guide to modelstorming – the BEAM* method of gathering requirements. Starting with a overview of what modelstorming is and moving into the steps that you go through, starting with whiteboard and moving to star schemas.

BEAM ME UP: REQUIREMENTS GATHERING FOR AGILE DATA WAREHOUSES

In this blog, Shaun goes over what agile is and what being agile is to him. Going past the basic meaning of being agile, Shaun then moves into the BEAM* side of agile – how BEAM* works with agile, and includes a sneak peek at the introduction to BEAM* course we run here at OptimalBI.

YOUR AGILE DATA WAREHOUSE STARTS WITH: WHO DOES WHAT?

This is a blog about one of the main parts of BEAM*: the requirements gathering portion.  More specifically, the who and what w’s from the 7w’s of BEAM*.

BEAM AND THE AGILE BA

This blog is a good example of how easy it is to understand how BEAM* works from a Business Analyst’s perspective, going over the 7w’s with a break down of what each one means.

BUSINESS EVENT ANALYSIS AND MODELLING – TO BEAM OR NOT TO BEAM

Brian’s blog on BEAM* was done after going on the three day BEAM* course and is a quick overview of what BEAM* actually is, and finishing with his thoughts on BEAM*.  Brian is also a Senior Data Warehouse Developer.

We hope you enjoyed this summary of our BEAM* blogs.  We’d love to hear your questions or comments about designing agile data warehouses, so please do reach out to us.
