Happy birthday to us! It doesn’t seem like that long ago that I first joined the Optimal Bunch, I was in the first ‘big’ round of recruitment, back in 2012. Since then we’ve evolved like any small business, so it’s time to look back and see everything that has happened here at OptimalBI, come on a memory lane journey with me, for old time’s sake.
In the beginning, OptimalBI started as any of Shane’s ideas do, over a pint with some mates. Shane, Paul and Julius were onboard, spreading the business intelligence word all over Wellington.
It wasn’t until 2011 when Victoria came onboard that things started to get a bit more serious. Processes were firmed up, and permanent employees were brought in to the fold so we could start consulting.
In 2012 we signed an office lease for the building we remain in today, and not only did we hold a big party to celebrate, we also made a chair-racetrack.
With the idea that now we were a proper company with our own office space, we decided to try to enter the Australian market, which prompted a trip to SAS Forum in Sydney. Unfortunately, not all ideas are great ones, and the Aussie thing didn’t work out as hoped.
Something that did work out however was our entry in the Deloitte Fast50 – we came 22nd nationally which is awesome, and 101st in the Asia Pacific Fast500. Not to be outdone, we even produced a video as part of the entry criteria… No apologies for this song ending up in your head, it was in ours for months!
In 2014 we hosted Lawrence Corr and his BEAM* course, something which we continue to do, even building our own 1-day version for our customers. Skipping ahead a couple of years, Victoria visited Lawrence when she went to Europe in 2016.
That same year (back to 2014) we got a bit of media attention around staff training and professional development, but really it was a chance to show off the orange phone booth!
Shouldering from the success of the BEAM* courses, we worked with Hans Hultgren and Genesee Academy to bring Data Vault to New Zealand, and again, it’s something we’re still doing today.
2016 had us celebrating our amazing Managing Director, Victoria MacLennan who scooped the ITx Professional of the Year award for her contributions to the tech sector. Read her thoughts about encouraging women to play the digital game.
More recently, we have had a few people leave for the UK, and it’s wonderful seeing them get together on the other side of the world for some warm beer. Come home soon team!
This year is our tenth birthday. While we sit back and reflect, thinking ‘holy moly’ we’d like to really thank you for being a part of our journey; each smooth straight and bump in the road has made all of us who we are. Here’s to the next ten!
