Data Integration, replication and acquisition tools are a hot topic in the Business Intelligence world. Gartner’s 2016 Magic quadrant for Data Integration tools included Oracle, IBM, Informatica, SAP, Talend and SAS in the Leaders quadrant with Microsoft, Adeptia and Attunity as Challengers. Their description for inclusion is:

Data integration tools must support different modes of interaction with this range of data structure types, including:

  • Bulk/batch acquisition and delivery
  • Granular trickle-feed acquisition and delivery
  • Change data capture (CDC) — the ability to identify and extract modified data
  • Event-based acquisition (time-based, data-value-based or links to application integration tools to interact with message request/reply, publish/subscribe and routing)

OptimalBI is lucky enough to work with many of the Leader and Challengers products so today I’m going to look at Attunity Replicate and Oracle GoldenGate. Kate has previously compared Attunity Replicate with Microsoft SSIS here.

What is Attunity Replicate?

Attunity describe it as a ‘Universal Platform for Data Replication and Data Ingest’

What does it do?

Attunity Replicate moves data. It replicates, ingests and streams your data where you want it.

How does Attunity Replicate make things better?

  • It takes away the need for manual coding to move data
  • It supports the databases you probably use including DB2, MySQL, and SQL
  • It shortens the time required to get analysis and reports to decision makers
  • It enables operational reporting without impacting production databases
  • It replicates data without the need to install software on the target databases

Where can you find out more?

There is a well-supported customer forum which is a good place to start.

What is Oracle GoldenGate?

Oracle describe GoldenGate as ‘a comprehensive software package for real-time data integration and replication in heterogeneous IT environments’.

What does it do?

Oracle GoldenGate ‘enables high availability solutions, real-time data integration, transactional change data capture, data replication, transformations, and verification between operational and analytical enterprise systems.’

How does Oracle GoldenGate make things better?

  • High performance
  • Simple configuration and management
  • Tight integration with Oracle databases
  • Support for Cloud environments

Oracle GoldenGate comes with Management Pack for Oracle GoldenGate which provides a visual management and monitoring solution for Oracle GoldenGate deployments. There is also Oracle GoldenGate Veridata, which allows high-speed, high-volume comparison between two in-use databases.

Where can you find out more?

You can visit the Oracle GoldenGate forum here to find out more.

How do the two compare?

While our team work with Oracle GoldenGate and enjoy its rich feature set we find it doesn’t meet the needs of our non-Oracle customers. Looking for an alternative we became Attunity partners. Below are some of the questions we are often asked by companies leading to our working with Attunity in recent instances.

Feature
Attunity Replicate
Oracle GoldenGate
Does the tool support new SQL Server users? Yes No
Can the tool handle automated DDL replication for non-Oracle environments? Yes No
Can the tool work without installing and maintaining agents on every end point? Yes No
Will the tool work without manual data type mapping? Yes No
Is there support for AWS, Azure and Google Cloud? Yes No
