I have just spent three days on a Data Vault Certification course (CDVDM), Delivered by Hans Hultgen of Genesee Academy.

The course was held at our offices on The Terrace in Wellington. The venue proved ideal for the purpose. Our conference room, with write-on walls, together with large round write-on tables were exactly what was needed for laying out models, moving them around and admiring the results.

I have been involved in Data Vault and ODE for some time now, I was keen to find out what I have understood from the books, and what I haven’t fully grasped. The course itself covers the basics, and then progresses through some reasonably tricky practical examples.

I have been working with Data Vault for some time. This was an opportunity for me to improve my understanding of the modelling technique more that anything else. Like many others involved with Data Vault, I have understood and implemented the patterns. It’s the next phase, the modelling of the data, where the full benefit is accrued. I now feel ready to move to the next level, having closed a few gaps and seen the benefits of features which I had previously not rated highly enough.

All in all, an enjoyable and beneficial course. Just a pity to have to sit the exam at the end!

Then there is Hans. He is a natural presenter who, is passionate about his subject.

What more could you ask for?

I would recommend this course to anyone who has an interest in Data Warehousing. By the end of the three days, you will fully understand; when, where and why you would use Data Vault. You will also be equipped to go ahead and start modelling your Vault.

Whatever you do, don’t design your next warehouse without evaluating Data Vault as an option!

Till next time

Brian
